Although similar to a flatbed trailer in some ways, one with a trailer drop axle has two deck levels, with the higher level at the front generally being about one-third to one-quarter of the total length. The main deck is lower than a flatbed (and can also be wider) and so can accommodate taller loads without infringing height clearance regulations.

The complete drop trailer generally measures up to 53 feet (16.2 metres) long by 8.5 feet (2.5 metres) wide and has a payload of up to 32 tonnes, so is capable of carrying very large and heavy loads.
