A drop deck trailer, sometimes known as a step deck trailer, is a semi-trailer that has two decks, one lower than the other. Both decks generally have no sides, door or roof, and the upper deck is at the front, immediately after the gooseneck, while the lower deck is behind it and runs to the rear of the trailer.
Variations include double decks that have two drops to lower levels, some with hydraulic systems that raise and lower the deck and features such as extendable chassis and ramps. All these features make a drop deck trailer extremely versatile for transporting all sorts of cargoes.
Drop deck trailers are very flexible and can contribute significantly to the efficiency of any transport operation. But their main feature is the lower deck, which is closer to the road than a flatbed trailer. This provides several advantages over other trailers.
The level of the lower deck makes loading and unloading extremely quick and efficient processes. The deck is easily accessible for forklift trucks, while the provision of a ramp means vehicles and machinery can simply be driven onto the deck.
The lower deck gives the trailer an extremely low centre of gravity. This makes it very stable, even when operating on uneven terrain or when cargo cannot be distributed evenly and reduces the risk of accidents.
The level of the lower deck allows extremely tall cargo to be transported. Since this will be carried at a lower height than on other types of trailers, the occurrence of low bridges on a route is not so critical, and so route planning is much simpler.
All drop deck trailers are sturdily built from robust materials that can withstand immense pressure. This allows you to carry a large variety of heavy cargoes both safely and legally.
Due to drop deck trailers’ attributes of easy loading and unloading, and being able to carry tall and heavy cargoes, they are commonly used in the construction industry to transport heavy machinery such as excavators and cranes. Similarly, they are used to carry large containers that can be quickly and easily loaded and unloaded.
Drop deck trailers are also commonly used to transport agricultural equipment that include tractors and harvesters, and for mining equipment. In fact, the trailers are so versatile and robust, they can carry anything that is large, heavy and cumbersome so they are the work horses of the transport industry.
A typical drop deck trailer will have two decks and will be about 2.5 metres wide with a maximum length of sixteen metres. One of the best ways to maximise load efficiency is to have a customised trailer that is specifically designed and built to handle the loads you normally carry. This means it can be made longer or wider to accommodate oversize loads providing it remains within legal limits.
You can also upgrade suspension and braking systems to deal with particular loads and terrain, have extended ramps and be able to raise and lower the ramp hydraulically. The aim is to have a trailer that meets your needs rather than having to adapt to the limitations of the trailer.
Drop deck trailers are, due to their lower deck, particularly suitable for tall cargoes so always prioritise these. Ensure all cargoes are properly loaded so the weight is evenly distributed and strain on the axles is minimised.
Efficient usage is mostly common sense, but we can advise on the best features for you if you get in touch and tell us what you do.
